The Ultimate Hermanus Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore

Just over an hour and a half from Cape Town, Hermanus is one of those places that makes the perfect weekend escape. Famous for its whales, and beautiful beaches, the town has much more to offer than a quick stop for whale watching.

From wandering the famous cliff paths and exploring the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley to discovering great restaurants, local markets and hidden coastal spots, Hermanus is a destination where you can easily spend a few days exploring.

Whether you're planning a romantic weekend, a family getaway or a scenic road trip along the Whale Coast, here's our guide to making the most of Hermanus.


When to visit Hermanus

Hermanus is a year-round destination, but the experience changes with the seasons.

The town is most famous for its whale season, which generally runs from June to November. 

Southern right whales migrate to Walker Bay during the winter and spring months to calve, and raise their young. September, October and November are generally particularly good months for whale watching.

Outside of whale season, Hermanus is still well worth visiting. Summer is ideal for beach days and swimming, while the cooler months are perfect for hiking and wine tasting.

What to do in Hermanus

1. The Hermanus Cliff Path

If you only have time for one activity in Hermanus, make it a walk along the Cliff Path.

The path follows the coastline for roughly 12km, stretching from the New Harbour towards Grotto Beach. Along the way you'll find spectacular ocean views, viewpoints, benches and plenty of opportunities to spot whales during season.

One of the best things about the Cliff Path is that you don't need to walk the entire route. Pick a section, take your time and stop whenever you find a particularly beautiful view.

For whale watching, keep an eye out for spots such as Gearing's Point, Siever's Point, Dreunkrans and Kwaaiwater.

2. Whale watching

Hermanus is internationally recognised as one of the world's great land-based whale-watching destinations.

During whale season, you may be able to spot southern right whales directly from the coastline. For an even closer experience, you can book a boat trip or explore Walker Bay by kayak.

3. Fernkloof Nature Reserve

For a change of scenery, head into the mountains at Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

The Reserve lies across almost the entire northern side of the town with a 60 km network of trails. These provide the opportunity for people of all fitness levels to enjoy some exercise and fresh air. There are incredible viewpoints, dams, waterfalls and mountain scenery to discover.

It's particularly beautiful for anyone who enjoys fynbos, hiking and photography.

4. Grotto Beach

Grotto Beach is one of Hermanus' best-known beaches and a great place to spend a slow afternoon. This beach is perfect for swimming, suntanning, games and long, leisurely walks and with ample parking it is the ideal holiday point for many.

Bring a towel, pack a picnic and settle in and relax for a few hours beside the Atlantic.

5. The Old Harbour

The Old Harbour is one of Hermanus' most historic areas and a good place to explore on foot.

The harbour has been preserved as an open-air museum, with old fishing boats, buildings and information about the town's fishing heritage. It's also right beside the coastline, making it an easy stop while exploring the centre of Hermanus.

6. The Local Hermanus Country Market

For a taste of the local community, visit the Hermnaus Country Market.

The Hermanus Country Market is a local market with over 60 vendors, offering fresh organic produce, homemade treats, artisan breads and cheeses, arts & crafts, plants and live music.

Market details: 

  • Location: Hermanus Cricket Club at the corner of Fairways Avenue & Jose Burman Drive, next to the Generations School.
  • Time: Saturdays from 08:00–12:00 or Wednesdays from 16:00–20:00.
  • Pet and family friendly, including a play area for children.

Where to Eat in Hermanus

Hermanus has developed into a surprisingly good food destination, with everything from casual cafés to seafood restaurants and beautiful wine estates.

1. Bientang's Cave

For one of the most unique dining experiences in Hermanus, head to Bientang's Cave Restaurant & Wine Bar. As the name suggests, the restaurant is tucked into a natural cave on the coastline, right beside the ocean.

2.Burgundy Restaurant

For a relaxed meal right beside the harbour, Burgundy Restaurant is a popular choice.

Its location makes it a convenient stop while exploring the Old Harbour and central Hermanus, whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

3. Fick’s Pool Restaurant

Located at the Fick’s Pool on Marine Drive, the restaurant is built directly beside the ocean, with wooden decks overlooking the tidal pool and Walker Bay. The setting is probably its biggest draw, you can have lunch or drinks while waves crash against the rocks below, and during whale season there’s even a chance of spotting southern right whales from the restaurant.

The menu focuses on pinchos, small sharing plates inspired by the cuisine of northern Spain. The idea is to order several dishes for the table, making it a relaxed option for sharing with friends or family.

4. De Vette Mossel

For a seafood experience that's as much about the atmosphere as the food, head to De Vette Mossel. Set beside the beach in Hermanus, this relaxed, barefoot restaurant serves a generous seven-course, 13-dish seafood feast prepared largely over open fires. Expect everything from mussels and West Coast snoek to calamari, prawns and a hearty seafood pot, served in a laid-back setting where you can kick off your shoes, feel the sand beneath your feet and settle in for a long lunch. It's a particularly fun option for families and groups looking for something a little different.

5. Explore the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

A trip to Hermanus isn't complete without spending some time in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The valley is one of South Africa's best-known cool-climate wine regions and is particularly associated with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
